Romania celebrates World Day of Bread through charity actions and a photo contest

As humanity’s most important food product, bread is being celebrated each year on October 16th, in more than 30 countries from all over the world. This year Romania enters the wide community of professional and amateur bakers who simply love making and eating bread. World Day of Bread will be marked in Romania by donations of bread products to the ones who need it the most. Meanwhile, the “Bread & People” on-line photo contest will try to show the people what bread really is about, to prove the diversity and complexity of the bread-making processes.

During the whole summer of 2010, anyone and everyone is expected to join the “Bread & People” on-line photo contest, which tries to strengthen the connection between bread and people – as the bread maker or the consumer. Winners of the photo contest will be chosen partly through the on-line voting process, and also by a specialized jury. The best photos in the contest will be exhibited next year in March, at the GastroPan International Exhibition in Targu Mures, which is the main trade fair in Romania for the bakery, confectionery and hospitality sectors. Some of the photos will also get to be published on the covers of the “Brutarul-Cofetarul” magazine – Romania’s leading specialized magazine for the millers, bakers and confectioners.

On October 16th 2010, producers from all over the country will donate bread products to social institutions such as hospitals, orphanages, shelters, canteens or nursing homes. In Romania, the main objective of celebrating World Day of Bread will be offering the people the opportunity to talk about bakers and about bread, to find out more about the importance and qualities of this product, to get to know its history and its future.

“World day of Bread” project will be promoted in Romania by “Brutarul-Cofetarul” (Baker-Confectioner) magazine, with the support of ROMPAN (Romanian Employers' Association in Milling, Bakery, and Flour Products’ Industries), under the supervision of UIB - International Union of Bakers and Bakers-Confectioners.

BRUTARUL-COFETARUL is, and has been for more than 10 years, the leading technical journal in the Romanian milling-bakery-confectionery sector. The magazine is distributed monthly for free, in 7,500 copies, to decision makers in mills, bakeries, confectioneries and pastry-shops all over the country.
